With the help of Best Kenyan Safaris you will never feel lost again
while planning your Kenyan safari triThe Serena Resort offered "tenting"
as an option so I booked our group of 10 into this much to their
chagrin...until we saw the resort. Tents had hot and cold water
and shower, hardwood floors, beautiful king bed! Keekorok was even
more beautiful with motel type cabins, awesome food and bar...people
fantastic. Met Maasai herdsman and heard his stories. Grounds have
boardwalk that take you to pond with hippos and buffaloe. Giraffes
and antelope hang around as do the monkeys. At night lions etc can
come on the grounds so they don't recommend walking about unescorted!
Can't wait to go back. We saw ALL the big animals...lots of lions,
cubs, elephants, giraffe, zebra, rhino, cheetah, leapord...hard
to resist singing the African Lion Safari Jingle though...very surreal!
Highly recommend both these resorts. Pool on property too! It is
in the middle of the reserve, at a green patch. We are in some company
! It has no fence, to protect us from the wild. It has its own pond
with 35 rhinos. You get many visitors, such as some uncommon birds,
a troop of monkeys, etc during the day. It is a great property.
Good rooms, well maintained. All the rooms have great view too.
But, no TV/internet. Also, as is the practice in Kenya, no room
service either. Food is good, they serve a great range of vegetarian
dishes also, thankfully.
The staff are courteous and full of energy. They keep wishing you
JUMBO... they keep enquiring if you are having a good time, sighting
animals, etc. The property has a good pool, a spa, a gift shop,
etc. This lodge is the original safari lodge in the Masai Mara -
and it looks like the disney version was copied directly for it.
The public areas are huge - comfy - and the decor is strictly African
adventure. The dining room is huge - in the center of which is a
giant buffet. The food is ok - hotel food served buffet style. But
there are three things that make this lodge a standout - 1) Location
- we happened upon a cheetah chase and kill right outside the lodge
on our second day. Wow. 2) The lodge has no fence - so at night
the animals roam - we heard hippo's walking by - and saw zebra grazing
right outside our door. Good thing that they provide escorts to
and from your room at night - very comforting. And 3 - they easily
have the best gift shop. That's what I'm sorry I didn't know to
begin with. I definitely should have done more shopping there! The
shop is huge - and the front part is pretty standard tourist stuff.
But in the back they have a huge selection of more native crafts
- carved gourds, hand made jewelery and old fashioned wooden african
sculptures. The prices were really really reasonable too. But of
course you don't know that until you go to other resorts - and by
then it's too late to go back. So if you stay here - do what I didn't
do enough of - shop! (go to the back - dig thru the stuff that is
not on easy display - that's where they hide the goodies!)
The
Keekorok Lodge was amazing. Great food. Great service and the atmosphere
is second to none. If you want the true experience of staying in
the wild, I would highly recommend Keekorok Lodge. It is in the
heart of the Masai Mara Reserve. We stayed here three nights at
the beginning of October 2009. We love this lodge so much! This
was a our third stay and it never disappoints. We photographed numerous
birds whilst walking around the lodge grounds, watched a few hours
old Hippo take its first steps and numerous other game animals from
the comfort of the Hippo bar! Other guests had seen a leopard drag
a kill up the bank near the Hippo bar and lions hunting near the
lodge entrance gate! What more could you want from a safari base?
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The food choice and
quality was excellent? next time we go back to Kenya we will base
ourselves here for the whole holiday! This was the first hotel we
stayed at on our 3 centre safari. Good location in the Masai Mara
with no boundary meaning the animals really do drift in and out
of the gardens. Hotel and grounds all very well maintained and staff
friendly and helpful. Our room was clean, comfortable and of good
standard. Good restaurant and the food was definately the best out
of the 3 places we stayed. Nice swimming pool with bar.
Hippo
pool could be viewed from a lookout/bar which was a good place to
go for pre dinner drinks. We had two enjoyable days here and would
recommend it. If you are visiting the Masai Mara then this is the
place to stay!! Everything about Keekorok is fantastic, the grounds,
the food, the staff (so friendly and always smiling) the swimming
pool, the rooms and of course the hippo pool. We asked to change
rooms with a better view of the open park land, we had moved into
our new room within minutes!! Outside our window were hippo, waterbuck
and zebra grazing, when the guard came to walk us to the main building
for dinner he shone his torch straight into the eyes of a hyena
who was sitting just outside the lodge boundry! On our last morning
we were woken by lions roaring, they sounded terribly close!! We
have stayed at several lodges in Kenya all of which have been very
good but Keekorok has got something speical and magical about it,
we will return!! We stayed two nights in Keekorok in early August
2009. It turned out to be definitely of the best locations we stayed
in Kenya and Tanzania. We received warm and friendly welcome, and
were accommodated in a comfortable and cozy room with all facilities
of 4/5 star hotel. We really enjoyed the food there and actually
every minute we spent there. Outstanding location inside Mara and
without fences so at evenings you have good chances to see zebras
just in front of your room. Nevertheless we felt totaly secure at
all times there. The views from dining hall, and the hippo pool
and one of a kind and amazing.. An absolutely tremendous place to
stay during honeymoon tour!! Hope to come back there sometime in
future.ps.
